Digital Cash: Secure wallets for online and offline payments (Giesecke+Devrient)

Presenter: Dr. Lars Hupel, Chief Evangelist (CBDC), Giesecke+Devrient
Biography: Lars is a CBDC Evangelist at Giesecke+Devrient with a particular interest in security, offline payments, and financial inclusion. An engineer at heart, Lars is working to bring modern financial services to people. Lars holds a PhD degree from TU München in the field of logic and verification.
Webinar Overview: When we think of “electronic payments”, there are a lot of different interpretations: bank cards, credit cards, mobile money, QR codes, and more. Lately, many central banks – including the European Central Bank – have started investigating or piloting digital currencies (CBDC) to introduce yet another way to pay electronically. The wish list for CBDC is long: it should support online & offline payments, work as usual at the point of sale, be accessible to users without bank accounts, … At the centre of these design discussions are wallets, powered by secure hardware.
In this talk, I give an overview over the current CBDC ecosystem, explain some novel techniques that could help to implement wallets at scale, and give a perspective regarding standardisation.

In this webinar, we will examine the convergence of biometric security and cold crypto wallets, with a particular emphasis on solutions developed on the Java Card platform. We will discuss how biometric authentication can serve as an additional layer of protection for wallet access, thereby mitigating the risk of unauthorized transactions. Participants will gain insights into the advantages of employing Java Card technology for secure and scalable wallet implementations, as well as how this platform facilitates the integration of advanced features such as biometrics. We invite you to join us in exploring the future of secure cryptocurrency storage.
